Concentrações sanguíneas altas de lipoproteínas de baixa densidade (LDL) e baixas de lipoproteínas de alta densidade (HDL) constituem fatores primordiais para o desenvolvimento de doença aterosclerótica, principal causa de morte nos países industrializados. Redução de aproximadamente 30% na morbidade e na mortalidade dessa doença decorre da diminuição do colesterol ligado à LDL (LDL-c) pelas vastatinas. Na tentativa de melhorar esse índice, a atenção volta-se para as possibilidades de elevar os valores do colesterol ligado à HDL (HDL-c), fração considerada protetora, anti-risco.
